Story

Svend Aage Holm-Sørensen (1913–2004) was one of the distinctive figures of twentieth-century Danish lighting design. Warm Nordic, which today preserves and reissues his design legacy, presents him as an important pioneer of Nordic lighting in the 1950s. His work is notable for treating metalwork, construction and the behavior of light as parts of the same design problem.

Holm-Sørensen had a background as a blacksmith, and this practical understanding of metal is visible throughout his lamps. Rather than treating a shade as a neutral cover for a bulb, he used brass details, perforations and narrow slots to control how light escaped from the metal surface. These openings became both functional devices and recognizable decorative signatures.

His work of the 1950s often combined light metal shades with carefully placed brass accents. The Brass Top table lamp of 1952 gives solid brass a prominent role from the base and stem to the top of its asymmetrical shade, while small openings along the shade contribute an additional lighting effect. In the Cone series of 1954, repeated vertical slits around the metal shade allow light to pass through and give the otherwise restrained geometry a graphic rhythm.

In 1959 Holm-Sørensen designed Lightsome as well as a group of lamps using opal glass, including Opal Shade, Opal Arch and Opal Lamella. Here the character of the light changes: translucent opal glass produces a softer glow, while metal elements and solid-brass details define the silhouette. The contrast between the graphic metal construction of Cone and the diffused illumination of the Opal designs shows how he adapted the form of a lamp to the optical qualities of its materials.

Warm Nordic now reissues and presents a selection of his designs in its Classic Collection in collaboration with the design heritage of the original creators. The company lists Silhouette, Ambience, Opal, Cone, Bloom and Lightsome among Holm-Sørensen’s designs. Original examples are also sought after internationally by vintage collectors, giving his work a continuing presence in both historical and contemporary interiors.
