Story
Alfred Christensen (1890–1962) was a Danish furniture designer and manufacturer. Born into the family of cabinetmaker H.P. Christensen, he founded Slagelse Møbelværk with his younger brother Erik Christensen in 1931. Erik oversaw the workshop and business operations, while Alfred was responsible for design and the machine workshop.
From the company’s early years, Christensen designed furniture for Slagelse Møbelværk. His earlier work retained classical influences, while later designs responded to the development of Danish modernism. Model 185 Sofa, designed in the 1940s, was later reissued under the name Tissø Sofa.
From the late 1940s, Slagelse Møbelværk increasingly developed furniture with external architects and designers, and Christensen devoted more attention to running the company. He nevertheless continued to design. One of his late works was the Model 370 Boomerang Chair, documented as a Slagelse Møbelværk design and published in Mobilia in 1962.
