Arne Norell | Swedish Furniture Designer

About

Lifespan: 1917–1971
Birthplace: Åsele, Sweden
Manufacturers: Norell Möbel AB

Story

Arne Norell (1917–1971) was a Swedish furniture designer and manufacturer. In 1954 he established his own workshop in Solna, near Stockholm, and in 1958 moved the business to Småland, where Möbel AB Arne Norell developed further.

Norell’s furniture combines wood, leather, upholstery and metal, often leaving structural elements visible. His work also reflects the influence of Danish furniture. The Sirocco chair of 1964 reinterpreted the safari-chair type through a demountable timber frame and leather support elements.

Designed in 1966, the Ari lounge chair combines a chrome-plated spring-steel frame with leather-upholstered cushions. After Norell’s death, Ari received the British Furniture Manufacturers’ “Showpiece of the Year” award in 1973.

The company he founded continues today as Norell Möbel AB, producing his original designs in Sweden. The clear expression of structure, careful combinations of materials and emphasis on comfort remain central to Norell’s design legacy.
