Story
Christian Hvidt (b. 1946) is a Danish designer born in Copenhagen. He is the son of designer Peter Hvidt and grew up close to the Danish furniture-design tradition.
A central part of Hvidt’s work is his collaboration with Søborg Møbelfabrik, which began in 1976. He is associated with storage systems including SM03, SM76 and SM200. Surviving documentation identifies at least part of the SM76 series as a collaboration between Christian Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard, so this page does not attribute every SM76 variant to Hvidt alone. The systems were conceived around modular organization for domestic and office interiors.
His work with Søborg continued into the 1990s. Records from Snedkernes Efterårsudstilling document an entrance-furniture series in 1993, made in woods including mahogany, cherry and beech, and the Multimedia Møbel in 1996, made in Danish elm with stainless-steel details. These projects show how Hvidt adapted storage furniture to changing patterns of use and new domestic technology.
