Story

Erik Kirkegaard (1905–1991) was a Danish furniture designer known particularly for chairs produced during the 1950s and 1960s. His work is closely associated with Høng Stolefabrik, while designs were also manufactured by Glostrup Møbelfabrik.

Among his best-known works is the Model 49 Chair of 1956. Its construction visually unites the curved back and arms, and surviving examples frequently combine teak with an upholstered seat.

Kirkegaard’s chairs often use splayed legs, sculptural armrests and upholstered seats that appear visually distinct from the wooden frame. The clear outline of the timber structure and the smooth transition between back and arms are recurring features of his work.
