Story
Sigvard Bernadotte was a Swedish-born industrial designer who worked across silverware, household products and office equipment. Born into the Swedish royal family in 1907, he trained at the Kungliga Konstakademien in Stockholm in 1929. The following year, the Stockholm Exhibition and the functionalism associated with Gunnar Asplund strongly influenced his approach, leading him toward a design language based on functional clarity and geometric form.
In 1930 Bernadotte began a long collaboration with Georg Jensen, becoming the company’s first non-Danish designer. His silverwork of the 1930s combined functionalist restraint with Art Deco geometry, often using repeated parallel grooves as both visual structure and tactile detail. The Bernadotte flatware pattern introduced in 1939 remains one of the best-known expressions of this language.
After the Second World War he established Bernadotte & Bjørn with Acton Bjørn. The practice became one of Scandinavia’s early professional industrial-design consultancies, expanding from tableware and household products into typewriters, calculating machines and corporate product design. In doing so, Bernadotte helped broaden the role of the Scandinavian designer from craft-based objects toward industrial consultancy.
His work did not reject ornament entirely; rather, repeated ribs and lines were made to serve both function and visual order. Georg Jensen’s continuing Bernadotte Collection still uses the graphic fluting derived from his original 1930s silver designs as a defining motif.
