Story

Space Copenhagen is a design studio founded in 2005 by Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou. Both studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, and established the studio on the basis of a shared educational background and aesthetic. At its core is the idea of protecting the creative process and remaining in constant motion, with an approach that resists boredom and predictability.

Their philosophy is described as “poetic modernism.” It combines modernist principles such as functionality and rationality with a pursuit of poetic and sensory beauty. By bringing together dualities such as classic and modern, industrial and organic, sculptural and minimal, they create a balance charged with tension.

Another important pillar is the idea of “slow aesthetics.” Rather than following trends, this approach respects the way materials age and the value of craftsmanship, aiming for enduring designs that can be passed from one generation to the next. Natural materials such as wood, stone, leather and brass are frequently used, with emphasis placed on the beauty they acquire through use.

Space Copenhagen inherits the traditions of Danish design without simply imitating them, instead reinterpreting them within an international context. The spirit of masters such as Poul Kjærholm and Finn Juhl is extended in a contemporary direction, producing designs that can settle naturally into different cultural settings such as New York and Tokyo.

Their work extends beyond furniture to internationally recognized interior projects. The renovation of restaurant Noma, the 11 Howard hotel in New York and Hotel Toranomon Hills in Tokyo are representative examples of their philosophy in practice. By designing the entire environment as a whole, they create an atmosphere that goes beyond function alone.
