Story
E. Kold Christensen was the Danish manufacturer most closely associated with Poul Kjærholm. Fritz Hansen records that Ejvind Kold Christensen and Kjærholm began working together in 1955 and continued their collaboration until Kjærholm’s death in 1980.
Kjærholm treated steel as a material with its own visual character and combined it with leather, cane, stone and wood. E. Kold Christensen translated these designs into production, manufacturing works including PK22, PK61, PK80, PK9, PK54, PK24, PK20 and PK31.
Original E. Kold Christensen examples are documented with markings such as “E. KOLD CHRISTENSEN,” “DENMARK,” and “EKC,” depending on model and production period. Marks should therefore be assessed together with construction, materials and provenance rather than used as the sole dating criterion.
After Kjærholm’s death in 1980, production of the collection did not continue under E. Kold Christensen. In 1982, Fritz Hansen took over production and distribution of the Kjærholm Collection, and major designs remain in production today.
History & Works
1951
Poul Kjærholm designed the PK25 Element Chair as his graduation project at the Royal Danish Academy, establishing the direction of his later steel furniture.
1955
Ejvind Kold Christensen and Poul Kjærholm began their manufacturing collaboration.
1956
Kjærholm designed the PK22 Lounge Chair and PK61 Coffee Table; both were produced by E. Kold Christensen.
1957
PK22 received the Grand Prix at the XI Milan Triennale. PK11 and PK80 also belong to this early phase of the collaboration.
1958
Kjærholm designed the PK31 series.
1960
Kjærholm designed the PK9 Dining Chair for production by E. Kold Christensen.
1963
PK54 Dining Table was designed.
1965
PK24 Chaise Longue was designed.
1968
PK20 Lounge Chair was designed; E. Kold Christensen began production the following year.
1980
Poul Kjærholm died, bringing his collaboration with Ejvind Kold Christensen to an end.
1982
Fritz Hansen took over production and distribution of the Kjærholm Collection.
