Story

Arne Wahl Iversen (1927–2016) was a Danish furniture designer born in Nyborg on 9 November 1927. Raised in a family connected with furniture retail, he trained as a cabinetmaker and studied furniture design at Odense Technical School. From 1949 to 1951 he studied at the Royal Danish Academy under Kaare Klint.

At around the age of twenty-five he established his own studio in Nyborg. By the late 1950s he was working with Ingvar Kamprad’s IKEA, translating Danish furniture principles into serial production. IKEA’s 1958 catalogue identified the SPARTA bookcase and BORNHOLM secretary with Wahl Iversen, while the early 1960s brought storage ranges including DOMINO and VARIÉ.

Beyond IKEA, he worked with Vinde Møbelfabrik, Komfort, Hans Hansen, Glyngøre Stolefabrik, Brenderup Møbelfabrik, Falster Møbelfabriken, and other manufacturers. His output included desks, secretaries, storage furniture, chairs, and sofas, often using teak or rosewood with compact, function-led arrangements.

In 1968, Bedroom No. 92, produced by Vinde Møbelfabrik, was shown at the Geneva furniture fair and is reported in several sources to have been ordered by Prince Rainier III of Monaco and Princess Grace. Documentation of his later career is more limited, but he is generally described as remaining active into the early 1980s. He died on 18 November 2016, aged 89.
